homeslice ipa

brewing notes:
05/09/15 - this bad boy is going to be my pilot test batch for using my 19L pot to do mini-batches again. they'll most likely be more experimental brews so i can play around with ingredients and hop combinations and yeasts and grains to see what i like, and if i like them, i can scale them up to a full batch. it will be a lovely hark back to my first biab batches which used the same pot and set up also.
this beer i want to really showcase galena as a flavour hop. i don't want it to be a single hop so i decided to pair it with galaxy; another hop i've never really had a solid go with. i believe the blackcurrant flavours that it apparently showcases would pair nicely with galaxy's strong passionfruit notes. for this ipa i've also omitted the larger crystal malt additions and carapils, and have instead added only 5% crystal, and added 5% wheat malt to give it the body and head retention. similarly, i've removed the often sweet vienna malt and added the grainier munich in its place. either or, it'll be a fun experiment.
the name didn't come from anything special. as the two hops have 'gal' at the start of their names, i was going to add that in some manner but then decided on homeslice because i think it sounds cool. i have no idea why it stuck.
13/09/15 - brewed this bad boy tonight. a midnight brew. went awesome. too tired to type. left it almost 24 hours and pitched! can't wait for it to be done.
tasting notes:
29/09/15 - bottled this guy up today and am so happy to say that it is tasting AMAZING. some really unique berry-like flavours from the galena, and this is paired lovely with the signature passionfruit of the galaxy hops. will be marking my calendar to trying these in a few weeks.
22/10/15 - had my very first taste tonight and holy god damn shit! this beer is REALLY good. the galena is pure blackcurrant and the passionfruit from the galaxy combine in such a unique way that really works. most ipas are very citrus focused and so this one is bitter and fruity, but with more berry and passionfruit (tropical) flavours.
24/10/15 - had the second of the seven long-necks i have of this one and i really need to upscale it and make a bigger batch. i really like the style. so ipa-ey but so unique with the flavours. stay tuned for an upscaled batch!
28/10/15 - have tried a few more of these bad boys and given lots away. am quite sad as there aren't many left so i'll have to make this one of the first re-brew beers soon. still tasting nice. i think the galaxy hop has quite a short life when used in high proportions though. it often tends to get grassy so i guess it'll just be an excuse to drink all of them sooner rather than later!
